It was a busy day for operations today at Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX. The locals were up and about, and there were some out of town visitors as well.

The B-1Bs of the 28th Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Wing, spent the day doing touch-and-go landings on the big runway. There are two squadrons of B-1s at Dyess, the other being the 9th BS. The 28th is identified by the blue and white checker stripe on the tail. I'm convinced that at least two of the pilots saw me taking pictures and dipped a wing at me during an otherwise level climb out.

In addition to the 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess is also home to the 317th Airlift Group. They had a number of C-130Js doing STOL practice on Dyess' shorter runways that parallel the main runway.

The first visitor was a Raytheon (Beech) T-1A Jayhawk from Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX near the Mexican border. This plane came from the 47th Training Wing, 86th Flying Training Squadron ("Rio Lobos"). The Jayhawk serves as an advanced trainer for those pilots slated for airlift or tanker duties. It also supports navigator training.

And finally, the highlight of the afternoon was a brace Talons that was practicing formation landings and takeoffs. These T-38Cs came from Sheppard AFB in Witchita Falls, TX. Sheppard is home to the 80th Flying Training Wing, and these two birds belong to the 469th Flying Training Squadron.

It was a beautiful day. I've been out there when it was hot enough to melt the enamel your teeth, or so windy you could barely stand up. Gotta love the Big Country.
